I would like to dedicate this blog to my mother and all the mothers across the world who keep working hard and non stop and still manage to hold the family together, keep smiling during the hard times, and are always there to lift you when you need a hand. There is no degree, no prior experience, no paid benefits but long working hours which are non-negotiable, and its a lifelong tenure. Yes, that’s the profile of a Mom.
I would like to narrate an incident that happened when I was about 14 years old. Now India has a festive calendar throughout the year and this particular incident happened during the Diwali festival. Ever since I was a kid I have always loved pets and so at that time I had a small white Pomeranian named ‘Lassie’. And while we were just busy doing the decorations of the house oblivious to the fact that Mom had been in the kitchen all day making the sweets and the savories. And my most favorite sweet was the laddoos. We have always had the habit of going out for long walks after dinner but on that day I told my parents that I am tired and I am not keen for the walk and so they went out for their walk and I thought to myself ‘Now is the time to binge on the laddoos’ 😀 And I opened the box where she had stored the laddoos and started enjoying munching away to glory 😀 and my dear Lassie was keeping me company, however, my joy didn’t last long and I heard the gate opening and realized that Mom and Dad were already back from the walk, and because I couldn’t find a place to hide on time, I just hid behind the fridge and was a little scared as well (because I was trying to finish the sweets before the festival). Now comes the suspense (haha) as my parents walked in they were surprised to see ‘Lassie’ wagging her tail but they couldn’t figure out why, and so my mom stepped into the kitchen and caught me eating my favorite sweet, and there I was smiling sheepishly and just mentally preparing to get the scoldings, but all that she had was a big smile on her face and said ‘ If you wanted to eat then just take some and eat, there is no need to hide’. Those are the memories I have and quite a few that are etched in my mind forever. Today when I sit back and rewind I ask myself that my mom could have chosen to scold me or could have just mentioned about how long she took to make those sweets, the long hours she spent in the kitchen working tirelessly. But there was no sign of anger and irritation, just a smile, a nice warm smile. No wonder the warmest hugs are only from your parents.
And so undoubtedly, moms deserve to be celebrated because they’re always putting others ahead of themselves. Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to stop and reflect on all of her hard work. Of course, Mother’s Day isn’t just a day for celebrating your own mother. It’s a day for honoring all the women in your life who support and nurture you, from your sister to your grandmother. It’s also a chance to wish a happy Mother’s Day to your mother-in-law, whose loving care helped shape the person you chose to marry.
Coming back to the current scenario, I feel that we are a more hassled lot of mommies at times, so much of multi-tasking, so many things and mental notes to make, reminders!!! The list is just endless. But despite all of this, Mothers are amazing aren’t they? Who else would do your washing, cook you delicious Sunday dinners, pick you up every time you fall, be a constant shoulder to cry on, and still fuss and worry about you long after you’ve grown up and left home? In these days of lock-down I see myself in a new role which is of a constant supplier of snacks to your kids. 7.30 am breakfast, 8 am snack, 9 am snack, 10 am snack… and repeat 😀 And you don’t see any activity in the school whats- app group either, it is just basically used for a) exchanging lock-down memes b) asking how long the queues were outside the local supermarket today c) arranging kids’ video calls, and now you’ve started turning a blind eye to your kids being on screens longer than usual. But coming back to Mothers Day, my kids are super excited, my 8-year-old daughter has been constantly trying to figure out ways to make the mothers day special tomorrow, my son is busy making a video dedicating it to me, and when I see them putting so much of an effort, I cannot help but smile and praise them for all their hard work, thoughts and efforts, those tiny little hands and creative little minds are putting in! This is a greeting my then 4-year- old son made for me and just watching his tiny hands put so much of an effort was enough to bring those tears of joy on my face and I immediately clicked a picture of this beautiful memory.
It is not so easy to figure out how the brains of a mom work, she is constantly thinking of what to do next, it makes me think when was the last when she sat down peacefully sipping on her hot tea, words fall short to describe a mother, her faith in her kids, her undying dedication towards her family, her constant nurture when you are unwell, truly God has indeed created something irreplaceable, her love and compassion is unfathomable. Today when I am a mother myself I understand the fear and the insecurities that my parents went through, the reason for their constant worry, their urge to know our whereabouts, no I am not complaining, I am a mother and now I am only understanding and learning to be better each day.
I would like to end my blog with this thought below:-
